And Crown Thy Good: Varian Fry and the Refugee Crisis, Marseille, 1940-1941 (Pierre Sauvage, upcoming), feature-length documentary in production. A non-Jewish New York intellectual named Varian Fry led the most determined and most successful private American rescue operation during World War II, helping to save some 2,000 people, including many prominent artists and intellectuals. In part, a reflection on the American response to the refugee crisis in Europe in 1940-41 and the beginnings of the Final Solution, this account chronicles Fry rescue mission within the context of its times and with a particular emphasis on the remarkable Americans who worked with Fry. |
